  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

– 1 lb beef flank steak or skirt steak for marinating

– 1/2 teaspoon baking soda for marinating

– 1 tablespoon soy sauce or substitute for marinating

– 1 teaspoon peanut oil for marinating

– 2 teaspoons cornstarch for marinating

– 1/2 cup chicken broth for sauce

– 2 tablespoons oyster sauce for sauce

– 1 tablespoon soy sauce or substitute for sauce

– 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce or substitute for sauce

– 2 teaspoons sugar for sauce

– 2 teaspoons cornstarch for sauce

– 1 teaspoon sesame oil for sauce

– 2 tablespoons peanut oil or vegetable oil for stir fry

– 1/2 white onion, sliced for stir fry

– 3 cloves garlic, sliced for stir fry

– 1 thumb ginger, sliced for stir fry

– 1 lb asparagus, tough ends removed and cut to bite-size pieces (or 1 bell pepper) for stir fry

Instructions

1-Step 1: Marinate the Beef First, marinate the beef by mixing 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon soy sauce or substitute, 1 teaspoon peanut oil, and 2 teaspoons cornstarch with 1 lb of beef flank steak or skirt steak. Let it sit while you handle the rest of the prep. This step helps tenderize the meat for that juicy texture you love in Asian beef sauce recipes.

2-Step 2: Mix the Sauce Next, combine the sauce ingredients in a small bowl: 1/2 cup chicken broth, 2 tablespoons oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon soy sauce or substitute, 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce or substitute, 2 teaspoons sugar, 2 teaspoons cornstarch, and 1 teaspoon sesame oil. Stir well to ensure the cornstarch dissolves, creating a flavorful stir fry sauce.

3-Step 3: Cook the Beef Heat 1 tablespoon peanut oil or vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef, spreading it in a single layer, and sear for about 1 minute on each side until golden. Transfer the beef to a plate and set aside to keep it tender and full of flavor.

4-Step 4: Stir Fry the Vegetables Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the skillet, then include 1/2 sliced white onion, 3 sliced cloves garlic, and 1 sliced thumb ginger. Cook and stir for 2 minutes until fragrant. Then, add 1 lb asparagus (with tough ends removed and cut into bite-size pieces) and cook for about 1 minute until it starts to soften.

5-Step 5: Add the Sauce and Combine Stir the sauce mixture again to redissolve the cornstarch, pour it into the skillet, and stir until it thickens. This creates the signature stir fry sauce that coats everything perfectly. Finally, return the beef to the skillet, stir to coat, and serve hot over steamed white rice.
